Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How will I find out about the progress being made at the school?
A: We update the Build a School website every time there is a new development at a school. This includes construction phases of new buildings, deliveries of new supplies, exam results and any reports that may come from the pupils, teachers or the community.

Q: Can building a school really have an impact on the lives of a community?
A: A school building becomes a focal point for education within a community. It provides a safe and comfortable environment where generation after generation can learn to read and write. The knowledge learnt by children and young people at school is carried home to parents and shared within the wider community. Build Africa encourages parents' participation.

Q: Does each school have a development plan?
A: Yes, the Management Committee from each school works with the Ministry of Education to decide what buildings the school needs. They draw out a plan showing the position of new infrastructure, school gardens and recreational areas. This plan will be shared with Build Africa when we begin working with the school.

Q: How does an investment in primary education help a young person to find employment when leaving school?
A: A primary education provides a child with skills of reading, writing and arithmetic which are essential to the success of any business. In each of the schools we help to develop agricultural training, life skills to help young people with their personal development and practical work skills such as carpentry or tailoring. In many of the communities that Build Africa supports we also set up training in business skills and offer small loans so young people can begin their own income generating enterprises.

Q: Does Build Africa have the experience to execute this programme?
A: Build Africa has been working with communities in the developing world for 25 years and throughout this time, education has been a key focus to our work. Our staff in the UK and overseas have many years of experience in implementing successful programmes with a lasting impact.

Q: What do you mean by sustainable development?
A: Development is sustainable where it "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Source -World Commission on Environment & Development.
